In the early 1990's scientists from the Natal Sharks Board of South Africa discovered a unique electronic wave-form that deterred sharks, but did not affect any other form of marine life. After many years of research, this technology was developed and incorporated into a product known as the Shark POD.
The Shark POD, although it proved very successful at deterring sharks, was bulky, heavy and expensive. Recognizing a significant opportunity, the founders of SeaChange Technology negotiated a worldwide exclusive licensing agreement with the Natal Sharks Board to utilize this wave-form in a range of shark deterrent products, now known as the Shark Shield.
A distinct advantage of the unique electronic wave-form is that it only deters sharks. It does not deter or interfere with any other form of marine life.
The effectiveness of this technology has been proven time and again, in over 10 years of use, with the original Shark POD and the Shark Shield, in both scientific tests and real life. It is effective in deterring a wide range of sharks, including Great Whites.
In April 2002 SeaChange launched the first of its Shark Shield product range for divers. Since then the Shark Shield range has expanded to suit many uses. Many more products are in the pipeline, including large arrays to protect aquaculture farms and beaches.
Shark Shield products currently provide protection from sharks for professional and recreational divers, snorkelers, swimmers, surfers, spearfishers, kayakers, boat owners, commercial fishermen, as well as emergency, police and military personnel around the world.
We are also proud of our environmental qualification. Shark Shield is set to reduce the slaughter of sharks directly by ultimately replacing shark nets, and indirectly by protecting people and installations from sharks. This is expected to reduce the clamor to kill sharks. Shark Shield has no long term effect on sharks or indeed any other creature.
Shark Shield is increasing the levels of participation in water sports and helps make people's working environment that much safer.
